There are 2 main sections of statistics

1) Descriptive statistics
Describes, summarizes, and presents data (with graphs, tables, key figures). You only describe the data you actually have. Example: You graph the maximum speed for a set of 4 cars.

2) Analytical / inferential statistics
Analyzes data samples and tries to make statements about a larger group (population) from which the data samples were chosen. For example, if you want to know what people below 18 in Austria eat for breakfast. You take a representative sample of this group of people, analyze it, and try to make a conclusion for all the people below 18 in Austria. The result will generally be an estimation, as the sample and the total group will never match completely. (eg. Mean breakfast calories of the sample group and mean breakfast calories of the total group)
