The current state of the internet

Data traffic

According to the World Development Report 2021, global internet traffic will reach 150000 GB per second in 2022. This amount is equivalent to 1000 times the value of 150 GB per second in 2002.

Connectivity

When taking a closer look at data published by the World Bank, a substantial divide emerging between rich and developing countries becomes visible. Three key factors are behind this circumstance;
First, a usage gap is responsible for 3.1 billion people not using the internet but living within the range of it. These people either need more skills or economic resources in order to make use of the internet. E.g., A smartphone costs around 80% of the average monthly income in low-income countries. Second, there is a supply gap that is responsible for an additional amount of 600 million people that have no access to the internet. Third, a consumption gap is responsible for most people who use the internet in low-income countries with deficient data consumption levels. As you probably expected, most of the unconnected people live in low-income countries.
